RFTF 2.0 - THE REMIX TASTER - DAY 1
L.A.S. - Urchin Remix
“This stellar jazz quartet gets a nice deep and jazzy house rework from Urchin.”
Magnetic Magazine
Leo Appleyard AKA Urchin is a rising musician and producer from South-West London who has begun making waves over the last few years. The artist has received airplay from BBC Radio 3’s Julian Joseph, as well as BBC Introducing Abbie McCarthy and BBC Radio Surrey’s Nicky Patrick Show.
Originally an ambitious 8-piece band that performed at the London Jazz Festival and venues around London, Urchin now represents the sonic output forged in a secluded island studio, in the middle of the Thames river, London.
A true digital age collaboration, I had never met Urchin in person before our musical alliance came about. I was first introduced to Leo via ISQ drummer Chris Nickolls who knew him well and had played in his live band. I had obviously heard of him on the jazz scene as an incredible guitar player and so I was really intrigued to check out his electronic project. I was blown away by the music I heard and the sophistication and creativity of his production. I knew instantly Urchin had to feature on this album!

L.A.S. - ORIGINAL VERSION
COLLABORATOR'S INSPO
When I first heard the track L.A.S., I instantly thought there were many hooky vocal phrases that would be perfect for the top line. The content of the lyrics really resonated with me at the time – during lockdown – and the general ambience of the track had weight and emotion, reminding me of Maribou State, Bonobo, and Bjork. I knew this would be a vocal-led remix and I wanted to see what I could get out of the vocal melody with a totally new feel – lo-fi house/disco.
The rhythm of the vocal phrases effortlessly lent themselves to the new BPM and the whole process was quite a quick one. I recorded guitars, electric bass over some classic drum samples and detuned synth pads.

L.A.S - LYRICS
You’re loving a stranger
Yeah You’re loving a stranger
You are
You’re loving a stranger
Yeah You’re loving a stranger
You’re lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo
You are
Sometimes when I’m alone
I wonder if
You ever really knew me
You’re loving a stranger
Yeah You’re loving a stranger
You are
You’re loving a stranger
When did you become a stranger too
